Solved! Strange silicon tube, ribbed on the inside
Our teenage son spent a year studying in the States and came back with gifts. I got a Simon and Garfunkel album and my wife got a nice bright red (Mexican?) plate used for grating garlic and ginger etc. Both lovely gifts but the plate came with a small brush and this strange blue silicone tube and we can’t for the life of us figure out what it is for. Any ideas?

That's hilarious. My MIL got me one of these a bunch of years ago and until now, I had absolutely no idea what It is and how it's used. I vaguely remember being told it's for garlic. That's it. The funny thing is is that I still have it. It's in my miscellaneous kitchen gadget drawer.
Mine actually came with a small plate with ridges in the middle of it. I feel like the guy in the video is missing a piece.
I'm watching more of this video and it's hilarious. Thank you for linking this. It made my night.

That’s James May or Captain Slow he was the Host of Top Gear till Jeremy Clarkson punched the producer and they all got fired. Then they ran a show called the grand tour. If you don’t know about it go watch Top Gear. It’s on YouTube and you’ll see the three idiots. It’s a great show and you’ll come to learn to love him like I do James May, Richard, Hammond, and Jeremy Clarkson.
34
u/No-Comb5322 2h ago
Nope only clarkson got fired then they cancelled the show after trying to replace him the other two didint get fired they stayed till they didint , but absolutely best series on earth.

Actually Clarkson didn’t get fired, the BBC just didn’t renew his contract which was expiring.
If you watch the first episode of The Grand Tour, he is the only one of the trio to have never been fired from a job.
7
u/Imsrywho 1h ago
He punched one of the BBC producers in the face for being served cold food from what I read.
5
u/Objective-Tea5324 1h ago
I heard that he wasn’t served a particular cut of beef and punched a producer over it. He’s a lovable ass on TV but probably insufferable in reality. “Clarkson’s Farm” is worth a watch.

The plate you have that comes with it is a grate plate. It’s to make fresh garlic paste and has nothing to do with peeling it. See demo video here I believe when these sets were sold by the As Seen on TV people the also showed it being used to grate cheese and ginger.

If you've never seen James May, he's hilarious. He was also in a show with a couple others called Top Gear (later called The Grand Tour). The three of them are so funny together. I'm not British nor into cars, but even I love watching clips of that show!

That small plate with the ridges is amazing! It’s used to grate garlic, ginger, chocolate etc. it saves your fingers and works quite well cuz it’s not sharp. I have several of both of these items and love them. Awesome kitchen gadgets for sure.

They do actually have similar ones specifically meant for exactly that, but one end is closed so it doesn't accidentally slip too far down and end up burning you while moving it.

Put garlic cloves with the skin on in it. Round it together between your hands. Peels the garlic. Hands don't stink.
→ More replies (1)8
u/PigSnoz 2h ago
You’re the first person I’ve seen mentioning the stinky hands thing. It’s the main reason I use it, no matter how much I scrub my hands after handling raw garlic, the smell lasts for DAYS. With this (and a garlic zoom to chop it up after) I barely have to touch the peeled cloves, so my hands remain unstinky.
7
u/FullofContradictions 1h ago
Yes! I'm so confused why everyone here is hating on it. They work fine. Depending on the age/hydration of your garlic, can be so much easier.

“Attempts to use product incorrectly. It fails”
Well duh…
37
u/mod_elise 6h ago
I watched someone use it, it was not easier than doing it manually.
It takes a 5 second task with almost zero effort required, and turns it into a ten second task that takes more effort and doesn't work consistently.
33
u/rp55395 6h ago
If you’re doing a couple cloves, just smacking it with the side of a knife and peeling is faster. If you’re doing a bunch of cloves it can save time because you can throw three or four at a time in it.
18
u/AproposOfNoth1ng 5h ago
If you’re mincing smashing works great, but if you’re slicing or roasting where you want the whole clove and have to peel them intact, 10 seconds in the microwave will loosen everything, no changes otherwise
→ More replies (10)13
u/rp55395 5h ago
That tube peeler leaves the whole clove intact. I’ve never tried the microwave method. TIL….

u/eipemilyek 4h ago
if you’re doing 10 or 20, there is a trick in the kitchen industry where you take 2 mixing bowls and shake them up. place them in a bowl and put the other on top to create a full sphere, holding onto the edges of both bowls. shake as hard as you can until the outer bits just fall apart. It’s pretty loud and can damage the cloves but damn is it efficient for big batches.

Could see someone with arthritis or carpel tunnel using it if trying to peel by hand is painful
13
u/JSD_Artistic_Edits 3h ago
This is exactly why I use them. I have a genetic disorder that causes pain, as well as dexterity issues, and peeling those blasted things is a nightmare for me. Used correctly, these make it a breeze! (The correct way to use them, BTW, is the cut the ends off the garlic cloves first, then roll them in the tube)

I have one and...it's actually pretty decent but you need a dry counter and you need to use the heel of your hand. You don't even really need to cut anything you just press down firmly and drag it back and forth about 5 or 6 times and the skin gets separated nicely. It's not a life changing tool but I keep it in the tin where I store my garlic and it works fine if you use it right.

u/HamunaHamunaHamuna 9h ago edited 9h ago
The way I do it is just press down on the garlic with the flat of my knife until it crunches. Then the skin just comes right off. No need for additional tools.

Very very important safety tips! (1) Cylinder must be narrower than than the tube it's being inserted into. (2) A sufficient amount of lubricant should be used to ensure proper functioning. In consideration of protecting the cylinder a copious amount of lubricant may be sufficient.
