Solved! Strange silicon tube, ribbed on the inside

Our teenage son spent a year studying in the States and came back with gifts. I got a Simon and Garfunkel album and my wife got a nice bright red (Mexican?) plate used for grating garlic and ginger etc. Both lovely gifts but the plate came with a small brush and this strange blue silicone tube and we can’t for the life of us figure out what it is for. Any ideas?

That's hilarious. My MIL got me one of these a bunch of years ago and until now, I had absolutely no idea what It is and how it's used. I vaguely remember being told it's for garlic. That's it. The funny thing is is that I still have it. It's in my miscellaneous kitchen gadget drawer.

Mine actually came with a small plate with ridges in the middle of it. I feel like the guy in the video is missing a piece.

I'm watching more of this video and it's hilarious. Thank you for linking this. It made my night.

That’s James May or Captain Slow he was the Host of Top Gear till Jeremy Clarkson punched the producer and they all got fired. Then they ran a show called the grand tour. If you don’t know about it go watch Top Gear. It’s on YouTube and you’ll see the three idiots. It’s a great show and you’ll come to learn to love him like I do James May, Richard, Hammond, and Jeremy Clarkson.

34

u/No-Comb5322 2h ago

Nope only clarkson got fired then they cancelled the show after trying to replace him the other two didint get fired they stayed till they didint , but absolutely best series on earth.

48

u/discoranger1994 3h ago

Only clarkson got fired. Hammond and may quit

23

u/GeordieAl 2h ago

Actually Clarkson didn’t get fired, the BBC just didn’t renew his contract which was expiring.

If you watch the first episode of The Grand Tour, he is the only one of the trio to have never been fired from a job.

7

u/Imsrywho 1h ago

He punched one of the BBC producers in the face for being served cold food from what I read.

5

u/Objective-Tea5324 1h ago

I heard that he wasn’t served a particular cut of beef and punched a producer over it. He’s a lovable ass on TV but probably insufferable in reality. “Clarkson’s Farm” is worth a watch.

The plate you have that comes with it is a grate plate. It’s to make fresh garlic paste and has nothing to do with peeling it. See demo video here I believe when these sets were sold by the As Seen on TV people the also showed it being used to grate cheese and ginger.

If you've never seen James May, he's hilarious. He was also in a show with a couple others called Top Gear (later called The Grand Tour). The three of them are so funny together. I'm not British nor into cars, but even I love watching clips of that show!

5

This. I don’t care about cars, I’m not British, but top gear is just a really good show.

That small plate with the ridges is amazing! It’s used to grate garlic, ginger, chocolate etc. it saves your fingers and works quite well cuz it’s not sharp. I have several of both of these items and love them. Awesome kitchen gadgets for sure.

It makes more sense that way to be honest.

They do actually have similar ones specifically meant for exactly that, but one end is closed so it doesn't accidentally slip too far down and end up burning you while moving it.

Put garlic cloves with the skin on in it. Round it together between your hands. Peels the garlic. Hands don't stink.

8

u/PigSnoz 2h ago

You’re the first person I’ve seen mentioning the stinky hands thing. It’s the main reason I use it, no matter how much I scrub my hands after handling raw garlic, the smell lasts for DAYS. With this (and a garlic zoom to chop it up after) I barely have to touch the peeled cloves, so my hands remain unstinky.

7

u/FullofContradictions 1h ago

Yes! I'm so confused why everyone here is hating on it. They work fine. Depending on the age/hydration of your garlic, can be so much easier.

Well duh…

https://youtube.com/shorts/QXsU_dKt8Dc?si=Oes7h9xISK33Dt69

37

u/mod_elise 6h ago

I watched someone use it, it was not easier than doing it manually.

It takes a 5 second task with almost zero effort required, and turns it into a ten second task that takes more effort and doesn't work consistently.

33

u/rp55395 6h ago

If you’re doing a couple cloves, just smacking it with the side of a knife and peeling is faster. If you’re doing a bunch of cloves it can save time because you can throw three or four at a time in it.

18

u/AproposOfNoth1ng 5h ago

If you’re mincing smashing works great, but if you’re slicing or roasting where you want the whole clove and have to peel them intact, 10 seconds in the microwave will loosen everything, no changes otherwise

13

u/rp55395 5h ago

That tube peeler leaves the whole clove intact. I’ve never tried the microwave method. TIL….

6

u/SpaceFunkRevival 4h ago

I hate the tube peelers. Just pinch both ends in your fingers of both hands. Slight twist, then the peels come right off.

2

u/eipemilyek 4h ago

if you’re doing 10 or 20, there is a trick in the kitchen industry where you take 2 mixing bowls and shake them up. place them in a bowl and put the other on top to create a full sphere, holding onto the edges of both bowls. shake as hard as you can until the outer bits just fall apart. It’s pretty loud and can damage the cloves but damn is it efficient for big batches.

Could see someone with arthritis or carpel tunnel using it if trying to peel by hand is painful

13

u/JSD_Artistic_Edits 3h ago

This is exactly why I use them. I have a genetic disorder that causes pain, as well as dexterity issues, and peeling those blasted things is a nightmare for me. Used correctly, these make it a breeze! (The correct way to use them, BTW, is the cut the ends off the garlic cloves first, then roll them in the tube)

Yeah, I didn't watch the entire 26 minute video but him going through the products at the beginning and saying "never really had a problem with that" was annoying and really set the tone for the whole video. Hahahaha - I love James May and we enjoyed this video, thanks

109

u/Ivence 9h ago

I have one and...it's actually pretty decent but you need a dry counter and you need to use the heel of your hand. You don't even really need to cut anything you just press down firmly and drag it back and forth about 5 or 6 times and the skin gets separated nicely. It's not a life changing tool but I keep it in the tin where I store my garlic and it works fine if you use it right.

87

u/HamunaHamunaHamuna 9h ago edited 9h ago

The way I do it is just press down on the garlic with the flat of my knife until it crunches. Then the skin just comes right off. No need for additional tools.

28

u/EddyArchon 8h ago

I have one of the rollers and use it frequently when doing something using multiple cloves of garlic. One or two? Just use the knife. Making 20 clove garlic chicken? Get that roller out and do them 5-6 at a time.

You remove the individual cloves from the bulb, and place the garlic cloves (unpeeled) inside, a couple at a time. Press down on the counter and rub back and forth, and it peels the individual cloves.

u/deep_blue_au 14h ago

You don’t have to cut the base off, but it does help. I run mine with hand and other side on the counter top.

All I got was cutting the base off a bulb of garlic is like the easiest thing you can do in a kitchen and it does help so I don't know if it's any deeper than that. You can also pull garlic directly out of the ground and eat it as well, if that helps anyone.

It’s called degloving

15

u/zinsser 14h ago

I met up with a bunch of writers and editors for dinner. Most worked on technical publications. One woman was describing the illustrated medical book she was editing on penile surgeries. Nearly every procedure started with degloving - usually with a close-up photo. For the guys in the group we kind of lost interest in dinner.

4

u/CompetitiveArt9639 13h ago

I have worked as a plumber for decades, one day a coworker got his wedding ring caught on a bungie cord removing a ladder from the top of his van, it degloved his ring finger. The next day all of us stopped wearing our wedding rings, my ex wife bought me a rubber one to wear.

Very very important safety tips! (1) Cylinder must be narrower than than the tube it's being inserted into. (2) A sufficient amount of lubricant should be used to ensure proper functioning. In consideration of protecting the cylinder a copious amount of lubricant may be sufficient.

That’s what the kids are calling it now. “Peeling the garlic.” “Son, you’ve been in the shower too long. Stop peeling your garlic for God’s sake! 😂

Garlic peeler?

u/jar0fair 15h ago edited 2h ago

Yup. This is it. Roll the garlic clove around inside between your palms with enough pressure and the skin will rip off. (The garlic skin, not your hand skin)

u/Ok_Quail_2080 15h ago

Ahh, never thought of that. Thank you

Rolling it between your palms works, but I have found that rolling it on a countertop works better.

Hello Garlic my old friend. The time has come, your skin to rend. And while I'm rolling and peeling, in this tube my son gave me, I smell, the smell of Garlic.

Now then the real question is... Does it work? Because I'll buy like 5.

5

u/Lopsided_Status_538 14h ago

Confirmed, it does. I use mine daily. I bought 3 just in case

u/Jwiley92 14h ago

Just put the flat side of a large knife on the garlic, your hand on the other side, and push into the cutting board. You should be able to remove the skin from the smushed garlic clove in 1-2 pieces without dirtying an additional tool.

Plus garlic tastes better when you smash is before cutting it.

Yes. It’s a garlic peeler

4

u/Salty_Squirrel519 13h ago

I use it to pulverize my garlic before pressing it with the rolling garlic press. Apparently it’s to bring out the flavour, reality- I never know how hard to press and end up crushing the garlic. Ha! My husband cannot for the life of him get it to work.

It looks like a garlic peeler. Put cloves in there and rub between your hands to peel the paper off
